A practical order for learning times tables

Begin with meaning, not speed
Before memorising an answer, a learner should be able to show what multiplication means with groups, arrays, drawings, or objects. Three groups of four and a three-by-four array both make twelve. That foundation gives every later fact something concrete to attach to.
Speed is useful only after the relationship is understood. Timing an uncertain learner encourages guessing and can hide whether the difficulty is understanding, retrieval, or pressure.
Use the inexpensive facts first
The zero, one, two, five, and ten tables have strong rules and patterns. They provide early success and useful anchors. Square facts such as six times six are also memorable landmarks for neighbouring facts.
- Use doubling for the twos and double again for the fours.
- Use the five-and-zero ending pattern for the fives.
- Use ten times a number as an anchor for the nines.
- Practise square facts as a small family of their own.
Let symmetry reduce the workload
Multiplication is commutative: seven times eight has the same product as eight times seven. Rotating an array makes this visible. Times Wizard can present both displayed orders while treating them as the same underlying multiplication fact.
Once the patterned facts and their reversed forms are secure, the remaining work is concentrated in a smaller group of facts from the sixes, sevens, eights, and twelves. Introduce these gradually and keep older facts in review.
